a guide to frozen gf pizza

Gluten free pizza.  It’s the thing that I have found tastes the most different from regular, gluten-filled food.  I have struggled to find GF pizza that rises and has the same dough-y texture that I used to love.  However, I have made some discoveries of hidden gems that come really close to the real thing, as well as some others that are really good.  While some of my favorite GF pizzas are served at restaurants around the world, there are tons of options in the freezer section at the grocery story, and I’m going to tell you all about them today.

Against the Grain

Against the Grain is one of my favorite brands of gluten-free frozen pizza.  Their crust is flaky, almost like pastry, and I think it is SO DELICIOUS.  I also love that their frozen pizzas are large, because a lot of GF pizzas are super small.  Their original flavors were cheese, pepperoni, and pesto, but they have recently expanded their line! They now cheesy jalapeno and bacon & onion GF pizzas, and then a “cheddar-style” GF and vegan pizza! I can’t wait to try these two flavors, but I will always love their classic pepperoni. They also make tons of other amazing products, one of my favorites being their rolls.  They have the same flaky, buttery texture as the crust and they’re just SO good.

Etalia

Okay, if you have not tried Etalia frozen pizza, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! I remember when I came across a picture of Etalia pizza on Instagram and at first, I didn’t believe it was gluten-free.  It has self-rising crust, which is so hard to find with GF frozen pizza.  But Etalia has truly mastered their crusts, and they taste like authentic, real pizza. The offer Margherita and Veggie style, as well as the Nudo, which is a plain crust. They also sell pizza screens, which help the crust cook to perfection because they allow the heat to directly reach the underside of the crust.  When I first tried Etalia, I was blown away – the crust is SO good.  This is truly one of the best gluten-free pizzas out there and you need to get your hands on some.

Freschetta

Freschetta is our go-to when we are running quickly through the grocery store and want to have an easy dinner option for the week.  It is more widely available than some other brands of GF pizza, so we end up buying it more for that reason.  That being said, it is still really good! While it does have the classic thin crust of GF pizza, I think the cheese on Freschetta GF pizzas is what makes it stand out.  The cheese has a really nice flavor and reminds me of regular pizza.  If you can find this in your grocery store, then it is definitely a good option.

Wegman’s

Wegman’s used to be one of my favorite GF pizzas, but recently I believe they have changed some of their products.  They used to have a GF Margherita pizza that was delicious, with a thin but cripsy crust that I enjoyed.  They released a line of cauliflower crust pizzas which are also GF, but I personally have not tried them. It seemed for a period of time that Wegman’s was replacing the GF pizza with the cauliflower crust pizza, but they have recently restocked and are currently selling both types! If you can find the nonn-cauliflower Wegman’s GF pizza, I definitely recommend it.

Udi’s

Personally, Udi’s pizza is one that I would only really eat if I was in a pinch.  It’s not bad, but it doesn’t stand out to me as an amazingly delicious GF frozen pizza.  That being said, if I needed to grab something frozen to take on a trip or in to a friend’s house and this was my only option, I wouldn’t be upset.

California Pizza Kitchen

I love California Pizza Kitchen pizza fresh, but the next best thing is their freezer version.  They sell it in three flavors, and they recently released a fourth GF pizza using their cauliflower crust.  My absolute favorite is their BBQ chicken pizza, which is the only one that I buy frozen – you just can’t beat BBQ chicken pizza.  While I wouldn’t say that CPK’s frozen pizzas are quite as good as their fresh pizza, they are definitely a good option if you find them at your local Target or grocery store.

Caulipower

When cauliflower pizza first came out, it seemed so unique and intriguing, and Caulipower was the first brand I tried.  Their pizzas come in a wide variety of flavors, and are pretty decent gluten-free pizzas.  Personally, cauliflower crust isn’t my favorite (if I’m having pizza, I usually want the real deal) but if you’re looking for cauliflower pizza, definitely check out Caulipower.

Trader Joe’s Cauliflower/Broccoli & Kale Crusts

So I know I said I wasn’t a huge cauliflower pizza fan…and I’m not…but these naked crusts from Trader Joe’s are actually super good.  We usually don’t buy just the crusts, but we decided to give both the cauliflower crust and the broccoli and kale crusts a try.  The instructions on the box tell you to cook the crust upside down for ten minutes and then right side up for another ten minutes, and then add toppings and finish cooking.  I followed all of the instructions, and loaded both my pizzas with toppings, and they turned out delicious.  It could be because I piled buffalo chicken, bacon and mozzarella on the crusts, but I really really enjoyed this pizza.  If you are looking for a healthier option in terms of crust, I would check these out.

Daiya Vegan Pizza

My younger brother began a vegan diet in 2020, so we began the hunt for a pizza that was both GF and vegan, since we keep our kitchen almost 100% gluten-free.  When he tried the Daiya vegan & GF pizza, he let me have a slice, and I was pleasantly surprised! I am not a huge fan of vegan cheese, but the crust wasn’t bad and neither was the cheese! If you are looking for a vegan & GF option, this pizza will definitely do the trick.

Oggi Pizza

I have only had Oggi frozen pizza once, but it was definitely one of the best gluten-free pizzas I’ve ever had! I found Oggi in a grocery store in Montreal, Quebec in Canada while I was on spring break with friends.  We were all making frozen pizzas one night, and I couldn’t help but try this unfamiliar brand.  One of my friends, who is not gluten-free, agreed with me that it was a pretty delicious frozen pizza.  What I loved about Oggi was that the crust was thicker than most GF pizzas I have previously encountered.  Sadly, I believe Oggi is only available in limited areas in the United States, but I cannot wait until I can find it near me!

Those are all of the GF pizzas I have tested & tried.  What are your favorites? Let me know in the comments or tell me on Instagram @Celiactivist!!!
